Heather Pic and Stefanie SpielmanAbout Stefanie Spielman and Heather Pick
Stefanie Spielman was diagnosed with breast cancer at the age of 31 in 1998. She established the Stefanie Spielman Fund for Breast Cancer Research after her initial diagnosis, considering it a life mission to raise money and awareness. She became a public figure for her outreach and was a frequent sight at Komen Columbus events and the Race for the Cure, including serving as the emcee and keynote speaker for several events. Stefanie received an award from Komen Columbus in 2007 celebrating her dedication to raising awareness and funds for the disease and helped kick-off the Race several years in a row.

After her diagnosis of breast cancer at the age of 29 in 1999, Heather Pick, an anchorwoman for WBNS-10TV, the CBS Affiliate in Columbus, Ohio, became a spokesperson for breast cancer awareness and an active member of the central Ohio community. Heather learned in 2004 that the disease she had beaten once had returned. Heather participated in many breakthrough new treatments and remained on-air during much of her treatment, saying once, "I don't want people looking at me with puppy dog eyes… I don't want to make this a 'Woe is me' thing."

Throughout both of their very public battles with this disease, Stefanie and Heather fought courageously while helping others and raising millions for cancer research.

Through the Spielman’s research foundation and more than 100 other community events they organized, Stefanie and her husband Chris raised $6.5 million for breast cancer research for the Ohio State University's Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital and Solove Research Institute.

Heather was an unwavering champion for breast cancer awareness and education. She received a community volunteer award from Komen Columbus in 2006, served as the emcee for Komen Columbus’ 2007 Committed to the Cure award luncheon and participated annually in the Race for the Cure, including emceeing the Race several years. In her last public appearance, Heather hosted the "Spirit Celebration with Heather Pick," raising almost $500,000 for the Columbus Cancer Clinic. Heather’s last appearance on WBNS-10TV was to kick off Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Heather lost her battle with breast cancer at the age of 38 on November 7, 2008. Stefanie lost her fifth bout with cancer at the age of 42 on November 19, 2009.

In addition to being friends, both these women were mothers and wives and loved by many. Their presence will be missed, but their mission to end breast cancer will continue.
