Hi everyone and thanks for taking the time to read my Race for the Cure story 2014
Well it's time to start thinking about the Race for the Cure again, scheduled for the morning of May 17th. I'm happy to report I am now almost six years from my original diagnosis and all is well! My family history with Breast Cancer has me visiting the James every six months and I'm so thankful we have such a great facility right here in Columbus. When I was told I had breast cancer the positive perspective was that it was caught early and the prognosis was good. With the support of my family and friends the surgery and treatment are now a distant memory.
I have been fortunate over the past few years to serve on the Komen Columbus Board of Directors. Even though I work full time and always seem to have too many things on my "to do" list I felt like this was an organization that I wanted to commit my time to. I've learned so much about the good work they fund in Columbus and the surrounding communities they serve. It has made me realize how fortunate I am to work at Battelle, where medical insurance is one of the many benefits offered and something many of us take for granted. Many women are simply not as fortunate and that’s where Komen Columbus steps in to help. The funds raised by the Race for the Cure go to help less fortunate women in our community and the surrounding areas of Columbus get the needed services to detect and treat breast cancer when they may not be able to afford treatment on their own.
I first became involved in the Race for the Cure as a way to honor my Mom and my maternal Grandmother who both lost their lives to Breast Cancer. My Mom lost her Mother as a young child to breast cancer and was first diagnosed herself in the early 80's. It is simply amazing what major strides have been made since then in early detection, prevention and cancer research because of organizations like Komen Columbus. The money raised through events like the Race for the Cure fund grants that work to find a cure each and every day.
This year is a really special Race for the Cure day for me and my family. My youngest son Reid is getting married at 3:00 that afternoon to a wonderful young women, Bethany Roell. While Beth and my daughter-in-law Chelsea are getting ready for the big day Reid, Taylor, Randy and all of Reid's groomsmen along with several other family members will be running in the Race with me. As I mention each year, I'm certainly not the athlete in my family but I have finished the race each year (even though my pace has not changed much and the new course last year had a hill at the very end which almost did me in). For any of you that have never experienced a Race for the Cure in Columbus, being downtown on race day is certainly an experience you shouldn’t miss. While running I think about all the women who are either struggling with a recent diagnosis or undergoing treatment and know they would give anything to feel healthy enough to participate in the race.
Many people's lives are touched by breast cancer every year. It is through events like the Race for the Cure that we continue to make progress toward finding a cure. If you or someone you care about has been touched by breast cancer please consider making a donation to support the Columbus Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure. Please consider helping me reach my fundraising goal by making a tax-deductible donation today. You may donate online with your credit card by clicking the "click here to visit my personal page" link at the end of this message. Your support helps us get another step closer to a world without breast cancer.
Each of the last few years I have been one of the top 10 fundraisers for the Komen Columbus Race, which is the second largest Race for the Cure in the country. This certainly would not have been possible without the support and generous donations from my family, friends and co-workers. While I reached out to each and every one of you last year that donated on my behalf to personally say "Thanks" I wanted to again sincerely "Thank You" for your support! I can’t tell you how much it means to me. I realize everyone has to make choices about which causes they can support so I thank you for your consideration of making the Race for the Cure one you support! Just a reminder to my co-workers please remember Battelle will match your donation dollar for dollar through our Giving Campaign which certainly goes a long way to helping us find a cure!
Thanks for your consideration!
